New Paltz University Research ('22-'23)
Mentor: Prof. Eric Keeling, Department of Biology at New Paltz University
Summary: Designed and implemented phenological data collection and submission protocols.
In the Spring semester of my senior year in undergrad, I was made aware of substantial amounts of phenological data collected for over a decade on various campus plants. This data was unused and plentiful, prompting me to conduct a literature review and develop a procedure for data submission to the National Phenology Network (NPN).
This project was not for credit, but instead based purely on interest in the subject. Through the project, I was able to better understand phenology, learn how to independently develop a protocol, and gain familiarity with the data and purpose.

I developed a procedure for data submission to support future work with this vast dataset.
While my contributions to the overall project were minimal, this was an incredible experience, providing insights into another layer of the research process: what preceeds conducting a research project. This prepared me for this development process in my graduate experience.
Not directly connected to my protocol, it is noteworthy that the campus is a certified Tree Campus, with numerous tree species. Many of these trees are observed as a part of this project which increases the potential for future students to utilize this data.
I have also attended several Tree Walk sessions and have conducted my own, which you can learn more about here:
