My science communication philosophy
Excerpts from my Advanced Graduate Certificate in Science Communication Capstone paper
I believe science communication at its best is the practice of making complex ideas accessible, meaningful, and engaging to diverse audiences without sacrificing accuracy. My philosophy centers on breaking down barriers and showing that science is not intimidating or exclusively for 'smart' people, but is deeply connected with the everyday life and experiences of all people. Science becomes most meaningful when framed as a narrative people can connect to. My philosophy has evolved from viewing science communication as dissemination to seeing it as a mirror. Communication is not about transferring facts from expert to non-expert, but about holding up a mirror so people can see their own curiosity and knowledge reflected back. Science communication should not just teach but encourage and engage people by affirming that science belongs to everyone, and that every person is already a scientist in their own way. Ultimately, my passion for science communication lies in making people feel ownership of science, and in celebrating the creativity and curiosity that connect us all.
